Good morning, I would like to apologize to the Nashville community for not using my turn signal this morning as I was turning onto 21st Avenue. I know it offended some of you but I was late and, well, didn’t really find it necessary to turn it on. As penance for my lack of signaling, I will donate $15 to the Traffic Awareness Institute to make sure this kind of thing never happens again.

Has America become so sensitive that an apology is necessary every time someone offends us? Or maybe could have, but probably not offended us?

Next time you eat lunch at your desk are you going to call the local soup kitchen and donate sandwiches because you’re feeling guilty for eating?

New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez was hungry at work the other day, so he ate a hot dog. He has since issued an apology because some guy in section 332 was offended he only had three dollars instead of six to buy his own hot dog. And after the apology, Sanchez donated 1,000 hot dogs and hamburgers to the local soup kitchen to emphasize how truly sorry he is for eating said hot dog.

Last week, Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher apologized for what was dubbed “Jerseygate” after he sported a Colts jersey at a charity function in Nashville.

Another forced, half-sincere apology for an act that was clearly in good fun and frankly, pretty clever. Remember that old saying, “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade”? That’s what Fisher did. He made light of a situation that is flat out dreadful. His team stinks, their record stinks and he knows it. Maybe he wanted to get his players’ attention – get them a little heated. But really, he did it to be funny. And it was funny!

I’m not in a position to judge what other people do or how they act or what they say. I can listen, watch, or read and either agree or disagree with their actions. But it’s silly to take things so literally and get worked up over something insignificant and then demand an apology that will likely be a PR move, not a sincere regret.
So in the words of Jeff Fisher, “I really apologize if I offended anybody, but if you’re offended over the nature of that type of thing, then I think you need to rethink things… I’m sorry if I offended anybody but if I had to do it again, I would do it again.”

And coach, I would laugh again.
