The bone crushing, speed skating, short skirting ladies of the Nashville Rollergirls show us that sugar and spice aren’t always so nice.

The NRG is taking Nashville by the fishnet stockings and leading us on a round and round journey into this highly-entertaining, alternative, ladies-only sport. On Saturday night, the Assault Rivals took to the rink against the Damsels of Distress and eventually prevailed after two halves of strategic skating and stellar wipeouts.
As best I could estimate, about 500 people packed out the Tennessee State Fairground’s sports arena to see the contest between teams whose members go by monikers such as Rambo Sambo, Gorie DeTails, Smith N. Wesson, and Jersey Jackhammer.
Each team puts five players on the rink at a time – three blockers, two captains (called Pivots) and two “jammers”. The jammers are the skaters that actually score points by breaking through the pack of blockers, outskating the other jammer and passing other opposing players.
A team of referees skate on the inside of the rink and monitor the skaters for technical fouls, tripping, track cutting and illegal procedures among other penalties.
Cheerleaders make their way through the stands and rink-side seats (called suicide seats) with mini-megaphones and the concession stand offers adult-beverages and snacks throughout the evening.
While the sport itself is rough and tumble, the atmosphere is family friendly complete with halftime entertainment and tunes to complete the ambiance.
Dress comfortably, because it’s pretty warm in the sports arena and bring cash because the concession stand doesn’t accept plastic. Parking is free and tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for kids ages 7-12. Group rates are also available.
