A former member of the Hitler Youth is issuing a warning to America: "Every day brings this nation closer to a Nazi-style totalitarian abyss."
Were it not for this man's personal history -- growing up in National Socialist Germany, serving in the Hitler Youth, fighting the Soviets, escaping from a POW camp -- it might be all too easy to dismiss what Hilmar von Campe has to say in his book Defeating the Totalitarian Lie.
Here's a bit of "then and now" from von Campe to Frontpage magazine:
I still remember the two Gestapo agents in front of our church on Sunday morning who would take down the names of those who came. Everybody knew what intimidation was and what the consequences of protest would be. My parents did not budge and did not look at the agents when they entered the church. Hitler was determined to end Christianity once the war was won. The Nazis knew that people who have a higher authority than government cannot be manipulated that easily as people without faith. They were out to separate God and people. "You can pray and sing hymns in your churches or at home," we were told by the Nazis, "but in society Christians have no say, we determine the rules." In the United States the ACLU says that they fight for the separation of church and state, but what they really mean is the separation of God and the American people. In the 21" century they are the carrier of the Nazi ideology.
"It took me a long time to understand and define the nature of National Socialism," von Campe is quoted as saying in WorldNetDaily. "And, unfortunately, their philosophy continues to flourish under different labels remaining a menace to America and free human society."
The website Sword-at-the-Ready offers information on the role of media -- specifically The Munich Post -- in standing up to the power establishment of its day and also sees parallels between 1920-30s Germany and recent developments in the United States, including the election of Barack Obama.
"Ultimately, The Munich Post along with any media opposition was taken over and physically destroyed, its editors, reports and owners taken to concentration camps and killed. Its offices were turned over to loyal mobs of Hitler and they were gutted and burned on March 9, 1933," says Sword-at-the-Ready.
For a negative take on what is called von Campe's "diatribe," go here.
A more thoughtful approach may be in order. Americans can authentically welcome (as I note here) a "black man and his family in the White House" while at the same time be open-minded enough to assess the thought-forms and possible real-world consequences of ideological passions that attend this moment in history.
And if need be, help close the door on threats to human dignity and freedom.
