In the hustle and bultel and turmoil of life, pastors are notorious for never relaxing. We always have too much to do to take out out to just be. But God's word is clear that the Lord desires us to rest and find renewal for our minds and bodies.
The next time you feel the need to relax but areqn't quite sure how to do so, consider these options:
• Sit on the porch and just listen to the birds.
• Sit in a relaxing spot and simply think about the goodness of the Lord.
• Count your blessings and thank God for every one of them.
• Go to a park and watch the squirrels and children play.
• Take a long drive on a two-lane country road with the windows down and wind blowing through your hair.
• Enjoy a sunrise or sunset with your spouse and/or children.
• Visit a nearby lake and watch the water ripple or throw in a fishing line.
• Take a long, leisurely walk and enjoy the scenery.
• Pick a favorite Psalm and read it aloud. Meditate on the words. Pray the Psalm for yourself or a loved one.
• Try to count the stars on a clear night. Imagine how Abraham must have felt when God told him to number them if he was able!
• Read, or sing, a favorite hymn and thing about what the words mean for you, personally.
• Listen to a soothing CD or tape. Let the music calm your spirit.
Finding simple pleasure in relaxing is, sadly, a dying art. Rediscover quiet times for your spiritual health. It will give you added strength and energy for the rest of your day.
