Pastors are often the first to stress the importance of prayer, yet our too-busy lifestyle often causes us to neglect this vital spiritual discipline as much as it does anyone else. Especially when it comes to praying for our church families by name. Here are some ways to add pastoral prayer to your daily routing. It will not only strengthen your congregation, it will bless your own life tremendously.

• Pray before you get out of bed or immediately after starting your morning with a general prayer for your church and congregation. This will help you keep them on your mind throughout the day.

• Pray for the women by name at a particular time of day, the men at another time, the teens and children at other times. For instance, set aside 10:00 a.m. every day to pray for all the men in your church, 11:00 a.m. to pray for the women and 1:00 p.m. to pray for the youth.

• Print out a list of your church members and carry it with you everywhere. Whenever you have a free minute, scan the list and pray for those the Holy Spirit impresses on your mind.

• Make a habit of praying for your church whenever you're driving. These can be some of your most effective moments of prayer and intercession. Just be sure to watch the road while you pray!

• Don't neglect praying for yourself. We must maintain our own spiritual strength and encouragement to effectively pastor and minister to others. One of the best ways to do that is through prayer.

• Whenever a church member asks you to pray, stop what you're doing, wherever you are, and pray! The blessing to your church family and the love they feel from their pastor will mean as much as anything else you can do for them.

Prayer is crucial to a successful Christian life, and it's critical to a successful pastorate. Begin today to make time to pray for your congregation. You'll begin to see rewards almost immediately.
