In the spirit of the Fourth of July, the American Kennel Club (AKC) and the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) are celebrating American dog and cat breeds. The emphasis on these breeds is a prelude to the AKC and CFA’s “Meet the Breeds” joint venture, which will take place this fall in New York City.
The truly all-American dog breeds include:
American Foxhound
American Eskimo Dog
American Water Spaniel
American Staffordshire Terrier
Boston Terrier
Chesapeake Bay Retriever
Plott
Australian Shepherd
Cocker Spaniel
Toy Fox Terrier
These breeds will be among the 200 dog and cat breeds that will make their appearance at the “Meet the Breeds” event. It will be the world’s largest showcase of dogs and cats and will take place October 17-18, 2009 at the Javits Center in New York City. According to the AKC, "each breed will be presented in its own designated space, decorated to reflect its heritage, characteristics and unique attributes as a pet." Attendees will get to pet the dogs and cats, ask questions and get information from experts on each particular breed. In addition, the event will feature demonstrations, shopping and fun-filled children's activities.
