Lately the sports page has been dominated by headlines announcing Michael Vick’s return to the NFL. The former quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons football team, Vick has recently been reinstated to the league after serving more than a year in prison for running a dog-fighting ring. That’s all well and good for Vick, if he can find a team to play for that is, but what about his dogs? Fortunately, thanks to the hard work and dedication of several rescue groups, many of the dogs are preparing to be reinstated into society with a second chance at life. One of the rescue groups instrumental in saving several of these dogs is located just down highway 80 from Sacramento in the Bay Area.

Bay Area Dog Lovers Responsible About Pit Bulls, or BAD RAP, is one of the rescue groups that became involved in the early days of this case. Usually, “fight bust dogs” are only held until they are no longer needed as evidence, at which point they are euthanized. At the time that Vick was indicted, in July of 2007, BAD RAP submitted a rescue proposal for the dogs. Along with other rescue groups and organizations, they were granted a visit with the dogs at the facility where they were being held in Virginia. Their initial evaluation of the dogs found only one dog out of 48 that was too aggressive to handle.

After many months of wading through the legal mire associated with the case, BAD RAP was able to bring 13 of the dogs to the west coast to begin their new lives in the foster home programs of three different West Coast rescue organizations. The Vick BAD RAP dogs have been neutered and microchipped and are receiving obedience and house training in their foster homes. Take a moment to visit BAD RAP’s website, read the Vick dogs’ stories and appreciate what organizations like BAD RAP have done to help these dogs get back on their feet.
