Poet Jericho Brown returns plus two days of New Orleans literary events
For today and Monday, the New Orleans literary calendar is dominated by poets or poetry readings with an educational lecture and a conservative political activist, Star Parker, in for good measure. In addition to these events, poet Jericho Brown, who was once a speechwriter for the mayor of New Orleans, returns to the city for poetry readings on three consecutive nights at three different universities.
Sunday, November 8
- Maple Leaf Reading Series, a weekly event, features writers followed by an open mic. Free admission. 3 p.m. Maple Leaf Bar, 8316 Oak St., 866-9359, www.mapleleafbar.com.
- At Fair Grinds, Jenna Mae hosts poets and spoken word readers at 8 p.m. Fair Grinds Coffeehouse, 3133 Ponce de Leon Ave., 913-9073, www.fairgrinds.com. This event is held the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of each month.
- UniVERSES hosts spoken-word, music and open-mic event. Admission $5. 8 p.m. Craige Cultural Center, 1800 Newton St., Algiers. A weekly event.
Monday, November 9
- Bill Robison Lecture Series, "Gods and Monsters, Wars and Women." The series forges on with "Was England's Greatest ‘Renaissance Man’ a Woman: Introducing the Real Elizabeth I" at 6 p.m., St. Tammany Parish Library, Slidell Branch, 555 Robert Blvd., Slidell, La., 985.893.6280.
- African-American conservative and syndicated columnist Star Parker addresses the Greater New Orleans Tea Party at American Legion Hall, 5518 Magazine St. Call 529-1319 for details. Jericho Brown's Appearances
Jericho Brown worked as the speechwriter for the Mayor of New Orleans before receiving his PhD in Creative Writing and Literature from the University of Houston. He also holds an MFA from the University of New Orleans and a BA from Dillard University. The recipient of the Whiting Writers Award, the Bunting Fellowship from the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard University, and two travel fellowships to the Krakow Poetry Seminar in Poland, Brown teaches creative writing as an Assistant Professor of English at the University of San Diego. His poems have appeared in The Iowa Review, jubilat, New England Review, Oxford American, and several other journals and anthologies. His first book, PLEASE (New Issues), won the 2009 American Book Award. (From the poet's website)
