Societe Nautique de Geneve, the Swiss defender of the America’s Cup, has proposed the East Coast of Australia as the new venue for the 33rd match. Auckland was the venue for Alinghi’s first Cup victory in 2003. At the same time, SNG has not given up on its attempt to hold the match in Ras Al Khaimah. Although RAK was ruled out by New York Supreme Court Justice Shirley Kornreich September 27, and a stay denied by the Court this week, SNG still is seeking an expedited appeal of Kornreich’s ruling.
Alinghi’s press release states that the Australian venue should be acceptable to both teams, but verball broadsides continue to be fired by both teams, each accusing the other of using the courts instead of the water to win the Cup.
In proposing Australia, Alinghi’s press release stated that the Down Under venue “should be acceptable to both teams if, as expressed publicly, the true intention of BMW Oracle is to race for the America's Cup on the water.”
In its press release announcing the New York Court’s refusal to stay Justice Kornreich’s ruling against RAK, GGYC said that for two years “Alinghi has attempted to turn the America’s Cup into the Alinghi Cup. For the ninth time, the Court has said no.”
So far, the date for the 33rd America’s Cup race is February 8, 2010.
BOR90 Dismasted
BWM Oracle’s contending trimaran, BOR 90, lost its mast during sea trials off the Coast of Santa Barbara on Tuesday. The winds were light at the time, when the forestay apparently snapped causing the mast to fall aft across the rear beam, snapping the mast in two. The boat was towed back to port and there were no injuries to the crew. (See AP Story on the accident at SF Gate.)
Rules Challenges
GGYC and Oracle have each appointed experts on yacht racing rules to advise Judge Kornreich about the contested issues on the racing rules and judges still before her. GGYC selected Bryan Willis (GBR) as its nominee for the three man panel SNG named Graham McKenzie (NZL) and the two of them mutually agreed the third member of the panel, David Tillett (AUS).
