This week is National Shelter Appreciation Week, an annual event that began in 1996. Created by the Humane Society of the United States, the first full week of November is designated as a time to promote and celebrate animal shelters across the country and acknowledge the critical role they play in our communities.
Local municipal shelters bear the burden of the public's lack of understanding of the pet overpopulation program and the actions of irresponsible pet owners. Animal control officers operate on shoestring budgets and encounter horrific conditions on a daily basis. Shelter staff have a job few people understand, but no one hesitates to criticize. But the shelter, the animal control officers and the dedicated staff are always there to pick up the pieces, shelter the homeless, prosecute the abusers and ease the suffering.
This week individuals and groups will show their appreciation for the municipal shelters in their community by aknowleding their contribution. Won't you take a moment to say "thank you" to the staff at your local shelter?
