No matter how tight your budget, how crunched your schedule, or how much weight you have to lose, running is always an option. Outside of a quality pair of running shoes, that will pay for themselves, there is zero cost involved. Whether traveling or busy at work or home, surely everyone can squeeze in at least 30 minutes to hit the pavement. Not interested in a hard-core run? Then do a light jog, or even a fast-paced walk. It's all beneficial, the results of which you'll see and feel in a short period of time if you stay committed.

Matt Johnson, the fitness expert at DietsInReview.com, shared the best places to run in Wichita. He's currently doing a best places to run series focused on major cities, but as a local, he didn't want to overlook his hometown. I can't argue with any of his recommendations.

River Walk downtown is a favorite. It stretches for several miles and provides a fine view of the city. It is a great place to get some sun and people-watch while jogging.

Great Plains Nature Center, located in East Wichita at Woodlawn and K-96, is another favorite. It stretches for about two miles and makes an ideal place to just get away and enjoy nature at its best. It is full of wildlife as well as places to picnic with the family.

Finally, most of Wichita’s neighborhoods have sidewalks, making it easy to get out in what might as well be your own backyard. No matter where you live, running in your own neighborhood is convenient and provides an opportunity to involve your family or even get to know your neighbors.

If you've got a gym membership and clock most of your running miles indoor on the treadmill, consider taking it outside. Wichita's climate is such that you can spend a good majority of the year running outdoors. Running outside, as opposed to inside, can:

  • Let you take in the scenery
  • Pass the time more quickly
  • Better prepare your body for the endurance necessary for races
  • Be more challenging and more motivational
  • Best of all, you'll burn more calories than on the treadmill
