No one wants to have their house egged for passing out floss or crayons to trick-or-treaters. Any kid will tell you that is a trick, and everyone one of them would rather have a treat. A big chocolate-covered, gooey-centered, sugar-filled treat. As the rational adults dispensing these sought after treats, it's up to us to decide just how high the sugar high will be.
Even though Halloween is a candy holiday, it doesn't have to be a detriment to the healthy habits or diet of yourself or the neighborhood kids. There are healthier alternatives.
Granola Bars. You want something that's low in sugar and high in fiber. A Kashi granola bar is a great example, and flavors like the Cherry Dark Chocolate are naturally sweet and delicious.
Sugar-free Gum. There are too many flavors available too list, and who doesn't love a piece of bubble gum?
Organic Lollipops. These seriously taste so much better than those suckers you probably planned on buying. Find the ones that are naturally sweetened as opposed to using sugar.
Juice Boxes. Children should drink juice in moderation, so be sure to find one that is 100% juice with no added sugars in a small serving size.
Popcorn. The less salt and butter the better, and kids can take them home and pop it in the microwave themselves!
Apples. This is the sweetest fruit of the fall season. Choose a variety and let treaters select the color they prefer - red, green, yellow or pink.
Dried Fruit. Who doesn't love raisins, dried cranberries or dried cherries? Or any of the many other varieties of dried fruit. Naturally sweet, full of fiber and oh-so-tasty!
Dark Chocolate. If you feel like handing out chocolate is a must, then make it a quality dark chocolate. This will have less sugar and more of the good qualities that actually make this a healthy snack, in small doses.
Planning a Halloween party for the little ones? This is another good place to steer clear of the sugar madness. Ditch the cupcakes and cookies for healthy Halloween recipes like Trick or Treat Trail Mix, Sugar-Free Dirt and Worms, or Pumpkin Walnut Muffins.
Kids will also have a hard time resisting this scrumptious Caramel Apple Dip.
