No more privileges for terrorists

The Peruvian Congress remove the benefits prison for those sentenced for terrorism after the publication of a book written by the leader of “Sendero Luminoso” the terrorist group that did more damage to the country, Abimael Guzman, who was described as an apology for terrorism and to encourage remnants that are still active.

The publication of the book "De Puño y Letra” by Guzman wrote since a military prison where Guzman is serving a life sentence, caused controversy since it occurred in a context that army soldiers were killed by terrorists refugees in the highland area of Peru which they operate in alliance with elements of drug trafficking.

Prior to the elimination of prison privileges, those imprisoned for terrorism in Peru could gain access to cutting his sentence by good conduct, which were reduced one year in prison for each seven years. This could be the case of former number 2 of the “Sendero Luminoso”, Osman Morote, who according to family and lawyers could be released the next year in pursuance of a sentence of 25 years in prison after his arrest in the 80s.

Terrorism is a sensitive issue for Peru because that left more than 25 thousand deaths and property losses of millions of dollars over 10 years of activity, in addition to the deaths of thousands of members of the Armed Forces and Police National.

By the way, there is controversy over the construction of a museum honoring the victims of terrorism, as critics say, also be used to remember the victims of abuse by members of the Armed Forces stationed in high areas of the Andean country, against the civilian inhabitants, including rapes, murders and robberies.
