Weight loss motivation is certainly something we would all like. Many interviews with huge weight loss success stories or even professional athletes include the question, “What motivates you?” For someone just starting on their weight loss journey, motivation may seem like the elusive carrot dangling in your face, making you take those extra steps toward health that may not be fun at all. So then the appropriate question would be, “What about when the carrot isn’t there?”

The fact is, weight loss motivation is not a necessary component of weight loss. Seriously. Any professional athlete will tell you that there are many days when they don’t feel like training. But, they do it anyways. The difference between their attitude and the average dieter is that the average dieter thinks “will power” and weight loss “motivation” must be present for success. Professional athletes and all around healthy people know that although motivation is great and leads to the best workouts, it is a bonus and not the end-all of weight loss success.

Motivation is given far too much weight in the minds of many dieters. They worry that they will have enough will power to eat right, or enough motivation to exercise like they should. Once the decision to become a healthier person truly becomes a lifestyle change, motivation can then be seen as a bonus, a wonderful bonus, but not something that is necessary for weight loss success.

When you have truly made the decision to become healthy (and subsequently lose weight) you will have days where there is little to no motivation. You will not feel like working out or eating right. But, if that lifestyle change was made deep down within you and you are truly dedicated, it will become easier to act even without motivation.

You can buy yourself new workout gear, try new healthy recipes, read weight loss success stories, and set mini goals to chase that elusive weight loss motivation. There is nothing wrong with incentive and certainly nothing wrong with increasing weight loss motivation. However, the sooner you accept that it won’t always be present, the sooner you can move on and the more likely you will be to lose weight and get fit no matter your mood on a particular day.
