The NYC marathon isn’t for another 149 days and counting, but many are looking for information about this famous race this week. The lottery results are going to be posted today at noon on the official ING NYC Marathon website and many are tuning in, hoping to be picked.

A new report released from the New York Road Runners tells that this year’s race will be the largest field of runners thus far. With 40,000 entrants for this 40th annual NYC marathon, the numbers are impressive but only a fraction of the 100,000 applicants that wanted to be there for the big day.

Marathon running continues to gain popularity among the masses. Once only attempted by the fitness elite, they are now becoming an attainable goal for many. Mixed views on this rise in popularity can be seen from those marathoners who are there to compete and those who are there simply for the accomplishment.

However you look at it, though, thousands and thousands of people running together for their health, their personal record, or a specific charitable cause can easily be seen as a collective push toward expecting more from our bodies and achieving things once thought of as extreme.
