We all have little tricks to keep us on the weight loss wagon. For some of us they involve getting off our butts to workout. For others it’s all about food and keeping things easy. I wholeheartedly believe you have to makes things simple to make them stick.
Here are some of my personal weight loss and overall health tricks that I employ in my home to keep me on track:
1. My Big Pot of Oatmeal: High fiber, low in calories and no added sugar, natural oatmeal cooked on the stove is an excellent health food, especially on chilly mornings. However, oatmeal packets are loaded with sugar and preservatives. Once a week (usually Monday morning) I make a big pot of oatmeal and then stick it in the frig. Then, every morning I simply dish up a serving, add a splash of water, cinnamon, and sometimes peanut butter, and nuke it for immediate warm satisfaction.
2. Grilled Chicken Strips: Another great diet food, chicken breasts are low in fat and a great source of lean protein. Again, about once a week I will grill a few large chicken breasts and slice them into strips. I keep them in the frig for quick meals. You can top a salad, sauté some peppers for fajitas, add them to brown rice and veggies, or stir them into just about any broth based soup or pasta dish.
3. Motivation through Clothing: I typically don’t work out until mid to late morning. But, I have my workout clothes on from the moment I wake up. Before I go to bed I lay out my workout clothes so when I roll out of bed in the morning I put them right on. When my workout time is near it’s one less thing to hold me back. It’s amazing to me how much this one helps me get moving.
4. Bribery! Self-bribery is a great motivator. Whether I promise myself a manicure at every 5 pound loss or a new outfit after a month of consistent workouts. Little bribes keep me going. Right now I am working towards a new running wardrobe!
5. Keeping Temptation Out Of My Home: I don’t bring foods around that I know are my weakness. Simple, I know. Having a small child in the house though I am often surrounded by snack packs and yummy treats. Pudding cups are sugar free in this household and snack foods are more likely to be cheese and crackers than high fat chips. I make sure that the snacks I feed my daughter are those that won’t be disastrous for my diet.
We all have tricks and hints that work for us and keep us going when we just don’t feel like it. For me it’s all about simplicity. If it’s easy, I am more likely to do it. So, anything that simplifies this healthy lifestyle gets rave reviews on my end.
I am interested to see what works for the rest of you. What little “tricks” do you pull on yourself or how do you make weight loss, fitness, and health simple?
