Every weekend, the Edison Theatre at the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum screens silent and early sound films. The Fremont theatre shows classics as well as little known gems, often with live musical accompaniment.

This July, the Edison Theatre takes the second weekend of the month off so the many silent film buffs in the San Francisco Bay Area won’t have to choose – between the weekly Niles offering and the annual San Francisco Silent Film Festival, which takes place at the Castro Theatre July 10-12.

July's schedule is full of promise. There is drama, romance and comedy. And, the month's selection includes of movies include some of the biggest names of the silent era – Douglas Fairbanks, John Barrymore, Harold Lloyd, Gloria Swanson, and even the onetime Mr. Swanson - Wallace Beery.

Here is the line-up for July.

Saturday Night at the Movies, with Frederick Hodges at the piano
Saturday July 4 at 7:30 pm (Suggested Donation $5.00)

The evening’s entertainment includes a feature and two short comedies. In Down to Earth (1917, Artcraft), Douglas Fairbanks and Eileen Percy star in an amusing romantic comedy about an outdoorsman in love with a society women. Their differing lifestyles prove a challenge for Fairbanks, the athletic man of action and good cheer. The cast also includes legendary character Gustav von Seyffertitz in his screen debut. Also on the bill are the short films, Don’t Shove (1919, Rolin) with Harold Lloyd, and Liberty (1929, Roach), starring Laurel & Hardy.

Short Subject Night: Salute to the Niles Dog Show, with Bruce Loeb at the piano
Saturday July 18 at 7:30 pm (Suggested Donation $5.00)

Woof! This special canine themed evening includes four shorts sure to make you howl with laughter. Teddy at the Throttle (1917, Keystone) is a fast paced comedy starring Gloria Swanson, Wallace Beery, Bobby Vernon and Teddy the Dog in the title role. Also on the program are Dog Shy (1926, Roach) with Charley Chase; From Hand to Mouth (1919, Rolin) with Harold Lloyd; and Dog Heaven (1927, Roach), with Our Gang.

This evening’s entertainment includes a feature and two comedy shorts. In the historical drama Tempest (1928, Schenck), John Barrymore plays a peasant soldier who rises through the ranks and woos a princess, played by pretty Camilla Horn, in a story set in Russia before and after the Revolution. As well, Louis Wollheim delivers a strong performance as a fellow soldier. Also on the bill are the short films, Just Ramblng Along (1918, Rolin) with Stan Laurel; and A Pair of Tights (1928, Roach), with Anita Garvin and Edgar Kennedy.
