If I were a movie producer and making a movie concerning the current state of affairs in the United States, specifically relating to the economy and how our elected leaders are responding, the title would have to be “Clueless in America.”
Not that long ago, after being questioned regarding the charge of taking on too many big tasks at once, President Obama bristled and said that a president ought to be able to do more than one thing at a time, and joked about being able to walk and chew gum at the same time.
Sadly for us, obviously, the president was wrong. It is clear that he, the Congress, and the Senate have way too many things on their plates right now.
Is there anything more important today than helping our citizens get back to work? Apparently those in Washington must think so as the jobless rate reached a 25-year high today of 9.4%, and that number is expected to rise.
In 1992 James Carville, former President Clinton’s campaign strategist. coined the phrase; “It’s the economy, stupid.” Obviously Mr. Obama was not paying attention. Karl Rove wrote a very insightful piece on this subject yesterday.
Thus far, the supposed stimulus plans have failed. Small businesses are counting the days till June 15th when allegedly the “ARC” (American Recovery Capital) plan is scheduled to commence. Sadly, for many of those businesses, it will be too little, too late, plus, the criteria and timeliness of this program remain a huge question mark.
As for your Congressmen and Senators, whether they are Republican or Democrat, they too have failed us. As they make preparations for their long July 4th break, their month-long August recess, and figure out how to spend their recent pay increase; more and more of our citizens will go hungry and are homeless.
While the Obama friendly press puts a positive spin on the unemployment numbers, and raves about the success of his current overseas trip --- it is is very likely that someone you know will come home from work today and announce that they have been laid-off/fired, and that this is anything but “funemployment.”
I look forward to someone explaining to me how this is “change you can believe in.”
