Poster Girl (Friends Along the Way Series) is a charming chapter book and the 2009 Mom’s Choice Award Silver Recipient in the category of Juvenile Level 1 Books (Ages 5-8).
Paula wants to win the third-grade science poster contest, and she is confident that she can...except for one problem-Cynthia Lyden: Little Miss Perfect. Paula is a free-spirited girl, who is just too messy for Cynthia, who wears her blonde hair pulled back in a ponytail and whose hair scrunchies match the clothes she wears. Anne Emerick has done a wonderful job of getting inside the head of a typical third grader. I particularly love Paula's narrative. "I'm just too messy for Cynthia. Everything about her is neat and clean. Like on her poster, she taped a page with writing about evergreens--a full page without one single cross-out!"
Cynthia has already turned in her science poster, but Paula hasn't even started. No big deal though. She's not worried about getting a late start and her poster will be better than Cynthia's. Paula decides to create a poster about the changing colors of leaves and comes up with a unique way to preserve her rainbow-colored leaves.
There's a clever twist as the best poster is chosen and Paula learns just as you can discover things about trees, you can also discover things about people you might not be able to see. This delightful read incorporates science with the intricacies involved with competition and friendship.
