The United States won their first game of the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championships in New Zealand on Thursday.  They out paced Iran 106-55.  The Americans were led by Kansas PG/SG Tyshawn Taylor, who finished with 13 points.

Butler's Gordon Hayward posted solid statistics in almost 18 minutes of playing time.  Hayward had 9 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block, and 1 assist.  He was able to shoot 3/9 from the field including 1/4 from beyond the arc.  He also connected on 2/2 free throws.

Shelvin Mack, the honorary team captain of Team USA, added 7 points on 3/8 shooting, including 1/4 from beyond the arc.  He also had 3 assists, 3 steals, and 2 rebounds in almost 18 minutes of playing time as well.

Recent Duke transfer Seth Curry added 12 points including 2/5 from on 3 pointers.  John Shurna lead the US team with 10 rebounds and also added 11 points.

Iran was outscored 30-13 in the first quarter and they couldn't keep pace from there.  All but one player from the US team scored and the minutes were spread evenly through the lineup, with almost everyone having in the 15-20 minute range.

The United States shot 55 percent from the field including 39 percent from 3 point range.  Iran shot 35 percent for the game and only 16 percent on 3 pointers.
