We've got Valentine's Day coming up pretty quickly. I know I'll be spending it with my wife of almost two years. But if you looked at the press release I posted the other day, it was a good reminder that there is a large number of people who won't be spending that time with their sweetheart. I'm talking mostly about members of the military.
Jennifer Belkus Goolkasion, the owner/photographer at Aphrodite Wedding Photography in Portsmouth, NH, understands this well, having seen it in her line of work. Weddings get planned and before the event happens, a service member ships out. She was inspired to give something back.
On February 8, 2009, she has organized local businesses to offer free professional portrait sessions, complete with hair and makeup, a free print (and substantial discounts on additional prints), gift baskets and more. Goolkasian has organized a cooperative event that has everything from the photos to the location covered.
I realize that this isn't a "national" event, but the hope is that other photographers around the country might be inspired to host similar events. Whether you agree with the wars we're involved in or not, this is one small way that we can show support for the service members (and their families) who are involved in them.
I'll be attending this Portsmouth event, helping out however I can. If you'd like more information about the photo sessions or if you'd like to do something similar in you area but aren't sure how to get started, let me know. I'll do whatever I can. I'd also like to know if other events like this are happening, so I can give you any exposure you might want or need.
