Road erosion after heavy rain (A.Brown)

If you've looked at wedding photographers' Web sites, you might have noticed that a lot of them refer to shooting in a "photojournalistic" style. What do they mean by that? Are they journalists? Is it a marketing gimmick? Either might be true.

My point isn't really about wedding photography, but more about a style that is photojournalistic. Some of us enjoy shooting landscapes, others have a talent for portraits, but all of us are trying to capture a mood, a story.  Whether we're documenting the majesty of the Rocky Mountains or the moment two people join in marriage, a photo that evokes an emotional response is more powerful.

One of the most effective ways to capture a moment, to create a dynamic shot that is part of the story, is to shoot for depth of field. By adding that depth, you bring a focus to the immediate subject while making sure that environment isn't part of the subject or lost in the background.

I took the photo on the right this weekend.  While I have some shots of erosion after heavy rain that are up close and personal and really showcase the damage, this one tells a better story. (Okay, so the color isn't perfect...I didn't do a full process on this.  I promise the next will be a more complete shot).

Oh, and for all of you shopping for a wedding photographer, I personally prefer the photojournalistic style. If you're looking for that, let me know.  I look at a lot of photo sites and I might be able to point you towards one you'll love!

For more info: Check out the photo collections on www.cnn.com and other popular news sites to see great examples of photos that tell the story, with and without depth of field.
