When it comes to point-and-shoot cameras, I've hesitated recommending any of them. It's not because I don't like them; it's because there are so many good ones! That said, I can recommend the Canon SD770IS.
Have I used it? Yes. I borrowed one not too long ago as a backup on a corporate photoshoot. It did a great job capturing the candids I was looking for and the occasional posed shot. The image quality is fantastic and at 10 megapixels, there aren't too many sizes I can't blow prints up to (in fact, 10 MP is probably overkill for the photos you'll take with this camera, but that's okay).
The SD770 gives me most of the options I'll use with a point and shoot, including white balance control, face detection technology and reasonable video capability. One drawback is that I can't shoot in RAW, but in a point and shoot like this one, I didn't really expect it. A generous LCD and good zoom round out this package.
It's a great camera for the everyday photographer who wants great snapshots, landscapes and even well lit sports photography (shutterspeed maxes out at 1/1500 and ISO 1600, so you can probably do reasonably well in lower light conditions too. I didn't have the opportunity to find out for myself). The SRP is $229, but I found it for around $170 from reputable dealers. So you don't have to break the bank on this one.
It's not an SLR or a high end point and shoot, but for a solid camera, it's a great buy!
