photo gifts binoculars

Need to find a gift for a photographer? Or do you have people asking you what you want for Christmas and you don't want to tell them about the $1500 lens that you really want?

Here are a few gifts to give to photographers, even if you don't know anything about cameras!

Sunglasses - There's nothing worse than squinting so much that you miss what's going on around you. Worse still for a photographer is realizing that the squinting made them miss a shot. Get them a good pair of lenses (at least UV coated, maybe polarized) and your photographer will never miss an opportunity!

Binoculars - Why would a photographer need binoculars? Well, why wouldn't they? Binoculars are a great way to quickly preview a zoomed in shot and also a good way to scout out a different shot location. I've got a small pair that I keep in my bag all of the time.

GPS - Not the kind for a car, but a portable hiking style one. Some cameras are starting to include GPS information in the information about a particular photo, but I still prefer the old school method of writing down exactly where I was. With a GPS, not only will I not get lost, but I can recreate a photo with ease.

Trekking poles that double as monopods - If you know a photographer who loves the outdoors or does any kind of sports photography, a monopod is a great tool. A lot of times, though, it's added weight. With a monopod/trekking pole, they'll get the added bonus of a hiking stick (or a pair) without needing to carry the extra monopod.

Frames - I know, I said I would keep these to non- photo gifts, but frames are something a lot of photographers won't buy for themselves. The result? Beautiful photos never leave the digital world. Pick up a few frames and mattes at a local craft store and give them to a photographer to encourage him or her to display their work. Or, get them a digital frame so they can show off a number of photos.

And if you're still not sure, gift cards to an online camera shop will certainly do the trick. There's no shortage of equipment and accessoried that photographers want but won't normally buy for themselves.
