This photo, courtesy of the Denver Public Library, the Colorado Historical Society and the wonderful Breck 150 represents a slice of life in Colorado history. Back in the 1800s, we actually had a train that went from Denver to Breckenridge, and over the Boreas Pass.
Do you have any photos that represent modern life in Summit County? If so, the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance would like to hear from you. Here's why:
On July 31st, 1909, the local order of Masons laid the cornerstone of the Summit County Courthouse, which is located on Lincoln Street in Breckenridge. The day included a parade, speeches by local officials and a 50 person choir. Hundreds of locals dressed for the this momentous occasion, and came out to celebrate the laying of the cornerstone and the building of the courthouse.
On July 31st 2009, the courthouse will celebrate its 100th anniversary. The town awaits this event with intrigue and anticipation. You see, when the Masons built the courthouse, they created a sealed time capsule, which contained items that represented what life was like in Summit County during the early 20th century. These included coins, mining keepsakes, newspapers, literature and more.
On the morning of August 8, 2009 as part of Breckenridge’s Grand Celebration, local county officials and members of the Breck150 Committee will unveil the contents of the historic time capsule to the public for the first time. It will be a memorable moment that residents will not want to miss.
When the 1909 contents are removed from the Courthouse, a new time capsule will replace it. Instructions for the next generation of Summit County residents will ask that the capsule be opened 100 years from now, in 2109. The new capsule will contain items that represent Summit County life today, and the Breck150 Committee is turning to the public to help tell that story.
Together with the County, the Breck150 Committee is asking residents to submit photographs to be included in the new time capsule. Specifically, the committee is seeking images which represent Summit County life. These “Slice of Life” photographs should convey to our residents in 2109 what the heart and soul of Summit County living is today. Perhaps you ahve a photo of yourself acting crazy at Ullr Fest. Or mayne you have a picture of one of the fabulous snow sculpture you created for the annual ice sculpture contest. The possibilities are endless!
