Rep. Betsy Markey is on the fence about a global warming bill, but she is gaining a better understanding of Washington heat. White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel met yesterday with Markey, D-Fort Collins, and five other freshman Democrats to try to convince them to vote for the climate change bill, according to ClimateWire.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Henry Waxman and the other Rep. Markey (Edward), is slated for floor debate tomorrow, though House Speaker Nancy Pelosi may be backtracking on the scheduled discussion.
The bill is long and complicated. Here is a nice summary of the bill in plain English. Among many other provisions, the bill would cap emissions and create a carbon credit plan, set tougher energy standards, create renewable energy investments and help establish a smart grid. There are so many provisions that Betsy Markey could probably justify voting against the bill for any number of reasons.
The Climate change proposal has suffered waning media coverage and public interest. The health reform battle and other issues on President Obama’s agenda overshadow energy and climate change concerns.
Even Fort Collins environmentalists may be reluctant to press Markey on the bill because it is so complicated and convoluted.
