This has the potential to be a real breakout year for the Stanford Cardinal offense. After a few years that would have to be considered down years, Coach Harbaugh has a team that could really explode.
There are a lot of IFs involved of course. Good health is the first IF. The progression of a young quarterback, improved receivers, and an offensive line that is built for success also provides question.
The success of any offense starts and ends with the offensive line. No blocking, and it does not matter who you have running, throwing and catching. The Cardinal should be good up front with a nice combination of returning veterans and quality youngsters looking to step up. It also appears there is some solid depth in the line should one or two starters go down.
Toby Gerhart in the backfield will make any running game look good. A few blocks here, a few missed tackles there and maybe he will chase that 2,000 yard mark he declared.
Andrew Luck, maybe the biggest X-factor for the year. He has the tools, he has the talent, but how quickly does he translate that on to the field? It is hard not to expect big things from him, even though he has 0 snaps under his belt in his college career. And of course this assumes that he holds on to the starting job he apparently won in spring.
The pieces are all in place for Stanford. The balance of a run and pass game will help each unit improve. But how fast will it all gel together? Do they hit the ground running starting in Pullman for game one? Or does it take 4-6 weeks into the season.
Stanford has a golden opportunity with the early season schedule to get things rolling. With a tough finish to the season, the Cardinal needs wins early in the season. So the growing pains need to be short and swift.
But it certainly appears if the team can get in synch early, and if they can stay healthy, this could be the best Stanford offense we have seen in years.
