Stanford Cardinal football head coach Jim Harbaugh was on Chronicle Live on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area last night. It was a nice sit down with the coach and panel members Dave Flemming (Stanford play-by-play radio announcer) and Tom Fitzgerald (this year’s Stanford beat writer from the SF Chronicle) and host Dave Benz.

The breaking news from the show seemed to revolve around scheduling. As previously reported, San Jose State has broken the contract to play Stanford in 2010 so they can take a $1-million payout by traveling to Alabama. Harbaugh says Stanford is looking at hosting Sacramento State in 2010 and then UC Davis in 2011 and 2012. Does that indicate the Spartan series is done with indefinitely? It certainly appears so at the moment.

As for other comments from the coach, he again named Andrew Luck the starting quarterback for Stanford although the competition with Tavita Pritchard will go on. “It is a fluid situation. Andrew Luck is our starter out of spring ball, but Pritchard has 19 career starts and some big wins like against USC. He will compete.”

More on Luck: “He had a very good spring game, but it was not just the practice game, he did that well all spring.”

Obviously Harbaugh is very optimistic about the upcoming season. He pointed to the “consistent, methodical improvement” the team has made in his first two years and is looking to reap big rewards in this third year. “The seniors coming in this year are poised for a really good year and also some younger players are poised to crack the lineup. I feel like the team has gotten better and better and better.”

Harbaugh is very excited about the return of Toby Gerhart. “I love talking about Toby Gerhart. He has great balance, vision and you have to tackle him down around the legs because if you go high, he’ll bounce off of you and he has the speed to break away. We will have a very physical offensive line, much improved wide receivers and tight ends and fullback Owen Marecic is a special, special player. But number-7 is our signature guy. We are going to get him the ball!”

Another interesting response came when Harbaugh was asked about his potential future as an NFL head coach. While one would expect Harbaugh to say he will stay at Stanford forever, I was surprised by the way he denied his ability to coach in the NFL. “I consider myself a collegiate coach.” He followed that up later with “I think I am a college guy.” It will be interesting to see as Harbaugh will certainly get offers at the end of this year should Stanford continue to improve.

In all, it was an interesting interview. Harbaugh always brings much energy and passion to everything he does. You could really sense his excitement for the season ahead. Excitement and enthusiasm I think many Cardinal fans that follow him will be sharing.
