Stanford tight end Coby Fleener will be fighting for playing time for the Cardinal this fall. The redshirt Sophomore had 13 catches for 176 yards and one touchdown in his first season. Fleener has some speed to get down field and could present some interesting challenges for a defense. He looked very good playing with Andrew Luck during the spring game, catching a 40-yard touchdown pass on 4th and 10.
As I clear out some notes from the spring game, here is what Fleener had to say about spring ball and the season ahead:
Q: what did you think of your play tonight?
A: It was nice to be on the field for as much of the opportunity that the coach gave me. Going against your own team is just as much fun as going against anyone else. Everyone plays just as hard.
Q: Talk about your TD catch? Not bad for for 4th and 10.
A: Andrew made a great play, the offensive line gave him a great amount of time. It was more Andrew than anything else.
Q: It wasn't all Andrew as that was a nice cut you put on the defender to get in front of the ball
A: Andrew put it right there and I was lucky enough to get it.
Q: What do you take away from spring ball? Where does the team stand?
A: As a team I think we are advancing right along as we need to be. Obviously there still room for improvement and some things we definitely need to fine tune coming into the season. Positions still need to be earned. Everybody still needs to earn their spot
Q: what are some of those things you need to improve on?
A: It is just the finer points, making sure we have the right schemes, get everything down as far as blocking the right person, make sure we pick things up correctly.
Q: You have about four months without actual practice, how do you work as a team to make sure you are ready for camp?
A: I think we just need to make sure we stay where we are at if not improve. We cant let it fall off from here. Good enough is not good enough anymore around here. It’s where we are at right now and anywhere above that. It can not drop off at all.
Q: So what is the expectation coming into the season?
A: Bigger, stronger, faster, everything we need to do to win the Pac-10 championship!
