Some more thoughts a day after the White thumped the Cardinal 42-17 in Stanford football's annual spring game. After the game Jim Harbaugh had a few things to say about his team.
Andrew Luck was clearly the story of the night as he lit things up for what is now being registered as 352 yards and 5 touchdown passes. He certainly has taken a huge step toward winning the starting quarterback job this fall. Coach Jim Harbaugh was impressed.
"Andrew played a very high level," Harbaugh said. "Same with Tavita (Pritchard), but Andrew made a lot of plays tonight. He had a heck of a game tonight"
When pressed on who his starting quarterback would be, Harbaugh gave more of a hint then he has all spring, "There are so many moving parts at the quarterback position but yes, if we started a game tomorrow, Andrew luck would be our starter."
But there was much more to the spring game then just the quarterback competition. Harbaugh liked what he saw from both his squads.
"Overall I was impressed, it was a clean game, we came out with no injuries in this game and that is the biggest and most important concern so I was happy with that. I thought it was clean from a lot of standpoints. I thought the execution was clean. There were not a lot of penalties in the game and execution was high. Alex Debniak, (a linebacker who impressed onlookers with his running) he has been doing a good job all spring. Running and doing the plays he runs, Richard Sherman had a good night. All the receivers really caught the ball well and ran crisp routes. A couple of fumbled snaps I was not please with that, and we need to sure up a little bit in the secondary. Overall I was really pleased. Defensive linemen Ekom Udofia and Sione Fua had excellent games and provided a lot of pass rush for the white team and that made it tough on the Cardinal from that standpoint. Good pass protection by the white team. Once they got Andrew in rhythm and gave him protection, he was throwing some seams out there."
On the play of linebacker Max Bergen who led the White defense Harbaugh was very happy, "Max did a heck of a job, there were some big holes in there that he was able to condense and shut down. He played a heck of a game. He is competing with Chike Amajoyi at the will backer spot. He did a heck of a job tonight."
Another very interesting aspects to the game was to watch Richard Sherman make the transition from wide receiver to cornerback. Of course given his two touchdown receptions, who knows if it is a permanent move or whether he just earned himself some two-way time this year. He stuck out to his head coach. "We have done some experimentation, he (Sherman) had a bunch of tackles tonight and played good on both sides of the ball. We are trying to get our best players on the field as much as possible and add depth as well. We are not trying to reinvent football where a guy plays offense and defense but it he can definitely add some depth and make some plays. I was pleased with how that worked tonight. Owen Marecic is a guy that is going both ways. I am pleased with the way the two way players played tonight."
Harbaugh was definitely in a good mood last night as spring camp came to a successful end. Now it is back to the weight room and film rooms for the next few months in preparation for the season. The team as a whole was very upbeat and seemed ready to take the initiative to continue their work and be ready for a season for which their goal is a Pac Ten championship.
NOTES: More to come from other players involved in the Spring Game. My apologies for the multiple fonts, still learning the posting systerm here at examiner.com.
