Stanford running back Toby Gerhart and kicker Nate Whitaker have been named Pac-10 players of the week for their roles in Stanford’s 51-42 win over Oregon on Saturday.
Gerhart was named offensive player of the week. He rushed the ball 38 times for a Stanford single-game record 223 yards and three touchdowns. He raised his season total to 1,217 yards surpassing his own record set last year. The 223-yards breaks the record of 220 that was set by Jon Volpe against Washington in 1988. Gerhart increased his average per game to 135.2 yards which is now second in the nation.
Gerhart was also named the Walter Camp Foundation's National Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts.
Whitaker was named Pac-10 special teams player of the week for his efforts. He converted three of his four field goal attempts. He hit from 29, 41 and 48 yards. The 48-yarder came with 11-seconds left to seal the victory against Oregon.
Whitaker was also dominant on his kickoffs. Just about every kickoff landed between the goal line and 10-yard line in the corner of the field allowing the return team to just cover half the field and leading to the containment of one of the best kick return units in the country.
The win improved Stanford’s record to 6-3. They travel to Los Angeles to face USC on Saturday.
