Stanford football is now bowl eligible for the first time since 2001. The Cardinal’s 51-42 win over Oregon earned Stanford its 6th win of the season. So where do they go from here?
There is still a lot of football left to be played. There are still scenarios where Stanford does not go to a bowl. Keep in mind, they are bowl eligible but they are not guaranteed a bowl with six wins.
That said, at 5-2 in the Pac-10, Stanford has not been eliminated from the Rose Bowl either. The odds are slim, but this is what needs to happen for Stanford to go to the Rose Bowl.
Obviously Stanford must win out over USC and Cal. Oregon and Arizona both have one loss in the conference. Oregon needs to lose one game and Arizona two games. Oregon State had two conference losses so due to the head to head, they should lose a game too.
Looking at the remaining schedules:
Arizona: @Cal, Oregon, @ASU, @USC
Oregon: ASU, @Arizona, Oregon State
Oregon State: Washington, @WSU, @Oregon
OSU’s only real shot at a loss will be in the Civil War at Oregon. It seems unlikely that Oregon would lose at home to ASU, so that means they must lose at Arizona. That means Arizona would need to find two losses in the three road games they play against Cal, ASU and USC.
Hey, it could happen.
Of course for any of this to matter at all, Stanford will have to win at USC (eliminating the Trojans from consideration) and at home against Cal.
In all likelihood Stanford will find itself in a bowl other than the Rose Bowl. But for the week leading up to the USC game it will at least be something to dream about.
