You are on a bye week and your next two opponents are playing each other, so how do you spend a Saturday evening? You can be sure that most of the Stanford football team spent a part of their Halloween night watching the Oregon Ducks crush USC 47-20.

While the Cardinal have already broken down the films, and have a game plan in place for the big match up versus the Ducks this Saturday, last week they watched on television as the rest of us did.

So how did it feel watching the game?

“I have seen this Youtube video of this baby water buffalo that gets attacked by some lions,” Coach Jim Harbaugh said of watching the game. “They get this water buffalo and they drag it into the water. It is in the water and fighting for its life, and then you get this alligator that is biting at this baby water buffalo too. You think we have it bad? I was feeling for that baby water buffalo who was in a little bit more of a predicament. But he was able to survive. I am drawing some inspiration from that.”

Harbaugh would not say which team he felt was the alligator and which was the lion. But he does know he has quite a task ahead of him and his team the next few weeks.

“This has to be the most prepared we have ever been,” Harbaugh said.

Quarterback Andrew Luck watched the game from the dorms with guard David DeCastro and some other teammates.

“I don’t think anyone saw it coming,” Luck said of the one-sided nature of the game. “They are both really good teams. Oregon is very good, they are athletic and they are fast. Defensively they fly around to the football. They feed off your mistakes and try to get you in holes.”

Running back Toby Gerhart watched the game with his baseball player roommate. He said he needed to get a head start on school work so it was both work and pleasure for him. “I was sitting there doing a calculus problem set just kind of hanging out. I watched the ASU/Cal game and right after that their game came on. Oregon is a good team. Their offense is hard to stop. It is going to make for a thriller of a Saturday.”

It is not every day that a team puts up 600-yards of offense against USC. The whole nation took notice of the Ducks. You can be sure the Cardinal did too. While to a man they were impressed with what they saw, they are back at work this week and ready for a huge challenge.

“I have never seen our team intimidated,” Harbaugh said.
