Last week was back on the winning side of 500. A nice return although not the dominating week I needed to get the season on the right side of 500. I am running out of time.
STANFORD -8 62.5 Cal
Turnovers and penalties are the great equalizer. For Cal to win, they will need Stanford to commit both. Cal will also be looking for a big game from quarterback Kevin Riley. Something he has not provided so far in big games. For Stanford it is more of the same. Hand the ball to Toby Gerhart and have Andrew Luck play well enough to give the defense other things to think about. Barring turnovers and penalties or a let down after the last two weeks, it is hard to believe this game will be very close. PICK: STANFORD
Oregon State -31.5 56.5 WASHINGTON STATE
I am not a big proponent of laying 30+ points on the road. But WSU showed me last week against UCLA that they just have nothing left in the tank. Meanwhile, OSU is a very good football team with Rose Bowl aspirations. The only way the Beavers do not cover is if they get caught looking ahead to the Civil War. PICK: OSU
Oregon -7 60 ARIZONA
The bad smell from Arizona’s performance at Cal is still burning in my nostrils. I thought Arizona was a good team until last week. Yet, this is a home game. Both teams are playing for the Rose Bowl still. I think Oregon is the better team, but at home, Arizona may be good enough to cover the points. Honestly, this looks like a 38-31 type game to me which would be a draw. But with points at home, I will hold my nose and make the pick. PICK: ARIZONA
UCLA -5 41.5 Arizona State
This should be a pretty ugly game. The under is actually tempting even though it is so low. That said, UCLA has found some offense the last few weeks. ASU is still sputtering and trying to figure out what to do with its quarterback situation. At home I will take the Bruins but not feel great about the selection. PICK: UCLA
LAST WEEK: 3-2
SEASON: 27-32-1
DISCLAIMER: I can not emphasize enough that this is for fun. If I were any good at this I would be off in Vegas retired by now. Enjoy and may it be a fabulous college football season!
