I used to work as a camp counselor while I was home from college during the summers, and my first year on the job, I got to work with a group of absolutely adorable 3 and 4 year olds – the “Pink Flamingos.”
At the end of the summer, a camper's mom gifted me with a beautiful brooch that was a pink flamingo with a dainty gold design, long dangly legs and little gold feet.It was such a thoughtful, and unexpected gift, and I wore it for years. But when I started to wear hijab a few years ago, I didn't know exactly how to wear it, considering a brooch sits only a few inches above your breast, which is kind of where you don't want people to look.
But then one day, I saw my mom wearing a brooch on her hijab, and I thought that was an awesome idea. When I saw this brooch at Anthropologie, I thought it would make for a great adornment to my scarf, and there are a few ways to wear it. First, the way my mom had hers on -- clasped in the front where the two ends of her hijab met. It was low enough that it didn't look like an extension of her chin, but high enough that it wouldn't make her uncomfortable if someone was looking at it. Another way to wear it is to pin it off to the side, somewhere by your shoulder, after draping your hijab across your chest – if that's how you wear yours.
Lucky for us, Anthropologie's Web site gives the dimensions of this brooch so you have an idea of how it will look before you buy it. Just remember to err on the side of caution when choosing a brooch for your hijab. Although I am a huge (and often to a fault) proponent of the “add to cart” button, it might be a good idea to look/touch/feel/try on similar pieces before you just slap them on your head, or slap anything on your head for that matter.
The right brooch can really give your hijab a dainty, feminine look, with just the right amount of flare.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to give my little pink flamingo another go.
