Today is the final installment in the “Rid Your Life of Clutter” series, and I hope that you all were able to benefit from this series as much as I did.
Fashion is about more than just how we look to ourselves in the mirror each day – it's about how we can use our love for all things beautiful to make a difference in the world.
Todays assignment: Make clothing (etc.) donations a regular part of your life.
Here are the rules: Scope out a donation center near you, find a charity online, or contact your place of worship, and ask about how you can help the deserving families in your community, and then mark your calendars. The day you pick will be designated as the day that you donate something, no matter how big or small, to the charity of your choice. Be sure to find a cause you believe in – that will make your monthly donations that much more meaningful.
The point of these regular donations have a purpose greater than just giving away your old stuff.
First, making a habit of giving things away on a regular basis will minimize the attachment to material things that all of us feel. Regular donations help us to keep things in the order of importance that they should be in. Sure, maybe you have a fave. pair of Evisu jeans that cost $300, but what's important is to live your life in a way that if your 6-year-old nephew were to have a nose bleed on them, you wouldn't have to go back and apologize to him later for yelling. Order of Importance is often jumbled in our world, and regular donations of things we like keep that order intact.
Next, making regular trips to charitable organizations such as Good Will, Salvation Army, or even your local thrift store will keep in perspective how lucky most of us really are. Shopping “thrift” has become somewhat of a trend among upper-class fashion lovers over the last few years, especially in terms of buying vintage, but walk into any second-hand store in the middle of the day, and talk to some of the shoppers. Ask the employees who their regular customers are, and it won't take long before you realize that many of the people who are in there aren't doing it to keep up with a trend – it's out of necessity.
And finally, if you like to hoard, this will minimize your urge to keep random nonsense that you can't even remember why you're keeping. Keep a sturdy bag in a central place in your house, and encourage everyone in your home – spouse, children, or even roommates to drop stuff in there from time to time. You'll be surprised how much fun everyone will have adding stuff to the bag, and how quickly the bag will overflow.
