ESPN.com’s Graham Watson thinks that Saturday’s trip to San Diego State can be a trap game for No. 6 TCU.
Watson doesn’t say how much of a danger the Aztecs really are, just that if the Horned Frogs are looking ahead to their matchup with Utah next weekend, that could spell doom for TCU’s BCS hopes.
But can the Aztecs really be a threat Saturday?
The Horned Frogs boast the Mountain West’s best defense—giving up just over 11 points per game and 235.8 yards per game.
However, TCU has dominated the defensive side of the ball because of its stout run defense. The Horned Frogs give up just 89.4 yards per game on the ground, making them the eighth best team in the country against the run.
But San Diego State’s offense isn’t powered by a physical run game. It’s fueled by the precision passing of Ryan Lindley and those speedy Aztecs receivers.
Lindley trails only BYU’s Max Hall in yards per game in the conference and leads the Mountain West in touchdown passes with 20.
If the Frogs do come to San Diego and fall asleep, look for San Diego State’s prowess in the passing game to lead them in an upset, even without leading receiver Vincent Brown.
But that’s only if TCU doesn’t come ready, which at this point—like the Aztecs’ chances Saturday—are slim to none.
Must See T.V.
People calling for a playoff system, take a look closer at what’s happening in the SEC.
Guess what—it’s a playoff.
The winner between the LSU-Alabama matchup Saturday—for the most part—takes the SEC West and wins the right to play (most likely) No. 1 Florida in the SEC championship game.
The winner of that game will be playing for the BCS national title.
Looks like a playoff (kind of) to me.
Mountain West Tidbit of the Week
The old adage goes “where there is free food, there will be college students.” Not so at San Diego State.
The university has been offering free food at the student tailgate before games, and still no one is coming. The Union-Tribune says that about 60 students were at last Saturday’s home game.
MWC Game of the Week
No. 6 TCU at San Diego State, 1 p.m. on Versus—The Aztecs can get their signature win and be one step closer to a bowl with a victory. That’s highly unlikely with TCU steamrolling to the BCS. Or is it?
WAC Tidbit of the Week
The WAC is trying to help Boise State out with its marketing problems. The conference has hired a PR firm to help the Broncos in their bid for a BCS berth.
