Chris Chambers is no longer a member of the San Diego Chargers.
The veteran wide receiver was told Monday that he will be released from the team.
Apparently, the Chargers saw Chambers as dispensable—he only had nine catches for 122 yards all year. He was thrown to 31 times this year.
He hasn’t been all too effective when he has played and even lost his starting role in Sunday’s win against Oakland.
Malcolm Floyd got the start instead of the veteran.
“There are a number of things that went into the decision,” coach Norv Turner said in a statement. “The reason we’re able to do this is the play of Malcom; the way Legedu Naanee is performing. Certainly there are a number of other things in terms of our football team that we need to address. Defensively and in the kicking game, we need to get some help.”
Chambers’ release is apparently is to just free-up a roster spot in order for the Chargers to sign someone to help out on special teams and defense.
San Diego is responsible for Chambers’ $4.55 million salary. If a team signs Chambers off of waivers, they will be responsible for paying him the rest of the season. If he does not clear waivers, then Chambers is entitled to $2.4 million, according to ProFootballTalk.com
