Surely Valhalla is just over the rise, as the moribund Northwestern Wildcats beat the nationally ranked ranked Minnesota Gophers 74-65 Sunday.
It was their first win over a ranked opponent in nearly three years.
Minnesota led 34-31 at halftime and Lawrence Westbrook's trey made it a six-point game less than two minutes into the second half. From there The Rodents went to rack and ruin. Craig Moore hit three of his six 3-pointers during that stretch, starting it with one and giving putting the Golden Rodents into a coma with the other one 39-37 to position the surprised Wildcats ready to administer last rites.
There would be no effective Gopher adjustment to the 1-3-1 defense. There would be no answer for the rain of three pointers who's basketballs must have been hijacked from the nearby Great Lakes Naval Station, and equipped with the latest "smart bomb" technology.
The Rodents come home for a warm, fuzzy, week with Coach Smith as they get ready to play the "choo-choos" from Purdue on Thursday at 6:00pm.
