Many people know the meditation pose when they see it, some actually hear the vibration of the voice but very few have any clue what it’s all about.
OM is a chant, it’s represented in the Sanskrit form of a written symbol, but beyond it’s visual and audio meaning is it’s power. It is believed that chanting OM three times sends out vibrations to the world. These vibrations correspond to a vibration that originated during the time the world was created. According to http://www.omsakthi.org/ “The sound of Om is also called Pranava, meaning that it sustains life and runs through Prana or breath.”
Most religions participate in this concept in some way or another. Many Christian Orthodox churches begin Sunday Service with songs from the Choir; Muslim’s vocalize the Salah up to five times a day following a strict ritual of cleansing, a prayer to Allah delivered loud enough that they hear themselves. The Buddhist and the Hindu chant OM.
The concept of OM ties in with the theories of the Law of Attraction or in more pop culture “The Secret.” The idea is very simple, that life is made up of matter and energy and all matter and energy gives off vibration. This energy seeks it’s worldly counterpart much like magnets attract and the energy or vibration you put out to the Universe is what you will receive in return.
Those who believe this know that whether wanted or unwanted, what you put out you get back, because the Law of Attraction is neutral. Lorraine Salgueiro owner of Bliss Yoga in Encinitas stresses the importance in her belief that “the Universe always lines up.” Salgueiro jumped into an MLM career 10 years ago with the hopes of building a better life, she whole heartedly embraced the concepts of the Hindu symbol of the absolute and even began creating ‘dream boards.’ A dream board is a literal poster board with cutouts and paste-ups of dreams and things a person would like to see come to fruition during the course of the year.
Within a few years she rose to Gold Director of the MLM company that she worked with and eventually had made enough to see her life dream of owning a Yoga studio and teaching the world of OM come to fruition. “We begin each class with grounding and intention, as each student sets out to define what they will create in their life. The OM vibration allows us to shape that intention and the entire planet with universal consciousness. The end result is feeling the uplifting of mind, body and spirit,” says Salgueiro.
The Rhonda Bynes book “The Secret” sold several million copies in North America and was eventually made into a movie (http://www.thesecret.tv/), it delves into the concept in layperson terms. Generic enough for those people who are of differing religious beliefs but still want to learn about this concept, which dates back to the earliest recorded concepts in history.
To whatever degree you choose to participate you will see it return. Whether it’s thanking your Starbucks Barista for Frap well made, or going out of your way to help a friend in need, or even if it’s just staying positive through negative times.
Call it Kharma, believe it in the form of the Christian rule, “do unto others as you’d have done to you” or just run with what your parents always told you as a kid, “be nice.”
