I walked into Harry’s in La Jolla for breakfast with a friend. As we placed our drink order of two coffee’s he added like he always does “extra cream, lots of it…the whole cow.” The waitress responded immediately back with “someone stole the cow.”
We looked at her dumbfounded until she twisted slightly and pointed to an eight and a half by eleven sheet of paper hung above the hostess stand that reads:
MISSING COW
“Werc Cow” was stolen from her location on Girard Avenue on April 25th. Proceeds from the auction of “Werc Cow” are to benefit Rady Children’s Hospital of San Diego and the Zoological Society of San Diego.
If you have any information please call the CowParade La Jolla hotline at 619-881-3371.
It also features a milk carton with a picture of the “Werc Cow” and details about her and her last seen whereabouts. At first I was shocked, and then I became sad thinking about the charity.
A few moments later the waitress arrived with two cups of Joe and a bunch of mini creamer containers. Which launched our conversation on the stolen cow. In high school we did scavenger hunts, that were like dirty versions of the childhood game and involved ‘borrowing’ items that we fully intended to return…eventually, but they were always in fun: A shopping cart (to carry the loot), the 18th pin off the golf course, the garden hose from the man who always sprayed the kids walking home from the bus stop…never anything that risked life (like stop signs) and certainly never something that was for charity.
I’m about three weeks behind reporting this article, but as of May 17th, the cow was still missing, with no idea of it’s whereabouts. I certainly hope whoever stole it has some grand scheme to present it at the end of the CowParade on July 11th in the auction with a massive check for the charities, but my guess is this was just a college or high school prank. More details about the CowParade can be found at www.cowparadelajolla.com if you know it’s whereabouts, HELP OUT, it’s for a good cause…because many of us enjoy creamer in our coffee.
