I’m a writer, and I’m at a loss of words, what do you say to someone that has less than a month to live?
Every year I receive emails that tear my heart up, make me want to run out and volunteer or empty all the canned food in my kitchen and run it down to the grocery store.
This year I learned of one simple request, “A little boy named Noah is in his last stages of a 2 1/2 year battle with neurobastima cancer. He is 5 1/2 yrs old. The family is celebrating Christmas next week. Noah's wish is to get lots of Christmas cards. Noah Biorkman 1141 Fountain View Circle, South Lyon, MI 48178.”
Immediately I knew I would send him a holiday card, but then I thought…what could I possibly write inside of it?
Does, “Merry Christmas” when there will be no happy New Year suffice? Or maybe something inspiring is better. But then, what could I possibly say that would summarize how I really feel about the fact that this child will never see his High School Prom, or getting his Drivers License? I think writing the next Harry Potter novel, would be easier than coming up with a few words to put inside this card.
So, I laid awake in bed contemplating my own blessings and wondering how his parents are surviving this heartbreak. I decided the best I could do, was utilize my skills as a Journalist to ask everyone in Internet-Land who reads this, to consider giving this holiday season.
There are many charitable causes in San Diego that could use your gift, whether it be your time volunteering, your canned goods, a wrapped gift for a child or a monetary donation. Or, if you prefer, simply pick up a Christmas card and mail it to Noah Biorkman.
Here is a list of programs in San Diego that could use your help:
South Bay Holiday Gift Giving
SD Coalition for the Homeless “Magic for Kids Downtown”
Adopt a Family
Christmas at the Shelter
Balboa Park December Nights
Other volunteer opportunities can be found at Volunteer San Diego (or follow them on Facebook)
Thanks to Lorraine Salgueiro of Bliss Yoga World in Encinitas for sharing this story, so that I could pass it on.
