There are a lot of popular paranormal television programs, and the paranormal articles on sites such as The Examiner, especially the UFO ones, garner some of the most readers. However, seeing the presence of paranormal related booths at the People’s Fair in downtown Denver and their popularity really gave me the sense of how much these subject are a part of our everyday lives, skeptic or not.
I was at Civic Center Park this past weekend for the People’s Fair volunteering for the recycling Green Team and manning a paranormal booth. Several UFO groups shared the booth, the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), who I represent, the Institute for the Study of Galactic Civilizations, and the Citizen ET UFO Briefing Meetup group. We were also getting signatures for Jeff Peckman’s (the Denver UFO Examiner) EXTRA Campaign to allow Denver voters to vote on the creation of a committee to look into Extraterrestrial visitation.
We had a lot of people visiting our booth, some were skeptical and wanted to debate and/or get more information. It is great that these people are at least open minded enough to come talk to us. Even more people wanted to come over and share their sightings. One gentleman was shocked that everyone didn’t know we were being visited by ETs, years ago he had been involved with the containment of these beings and their ships when he was in the Navy! Don’t worry I will be following up on this one.
There was one other UFO related group called Maitreya. They feel that Extraterrestrials are visiting us and have brought us profits. They feel there are signs, including crop circles, and a strange light phenomenon that has been seen here in Denver and all over the world, that they see as evidence of the coming of another prophet. You can read more about them here.
What really opened my eyes was not just the popularity of our booth, but the many other paranormal booths. There were quite a few Tarot card readers, psychics, and palm readers. I found it even more shocking that every time I passed by their booths they were full and some even had a short line of people waiting to get in. None of their lines were as long as the line for a Turkey leg, but they were keeping busy.
I appreciate the kind of open mindedness that these fairgoers show. It is hard to ignore the evidence when it comes to some of the well-produced documentaries on things such as psychic detectives. Tarot, I believe, is another form of divination, similar to dowsing. Many natural resource companies hire dowsers to find water, oil, natural gas, and more. No one is quite sure how these things work, but companies have had enough success using these methods that they continue to hire dowsers. I will highlight this topic and a group of dowsers in Denver in an upcoming article.
Although the news is supposed to reflect the interests of the public, it is rare that we see much in the way of paranormal, at least not in a way that I feel truly reflects our interests in these topics.
America is the home of pragmatism, and that is a great thing. Our hard scientific rigor has lead America to be the technological giant that it is, and has helped create the modern science revolution throughout the world. However, there is still so much we don’t know. Basic phenomena such as gravity itself can be measured, but we do not know why it does what it does, its mechanisms elude us and are still beyond our current understanding.
We do a great job reveling in our accomplishments, but admitting we still have a lot more to learn can be humbling. However doing so, and opening our eyes to the mysteries of the very basic workings of our existence can make the world a more wondrous and adventurous place. Lord of the Rings, which I love, or any other fairy tail or fantasy don’t got nuthin’ on the magic and enchantment of every day life if you just allow yourself to simply be open to the possibilities.
