Chicago police officials and members of the city's Multi-Cultural Forum announced a series of initiatives to curb violence now that summer is officially here.
With temperatures hitting the 90s this week, police expect more people to be heading outdoors, especially at night when violent crime is most likely to occur.
Superintendent Jody P. Weis points out crime is down in Chicago by nearly 8 percent compared to a year ago, but says his department needs to do more to make sure the crime rate keeps dropping.
The initiatives include adjusting the hours of the Gang Enforcement and Tactical Teams to coincide with the high crime hours.
Also, all specialized teams, such as the Saturation Team, will be in full uniform to show a strong, highly visible presence in violence-prone communities. In addition, Weis says more officers will also be redeployed to the patrol division.
Chicago police will also work closely with the Illinois Department of Corrections and U.S. Marshals to conduct parolee compliance checks.
Perhaps not as exciting, but no less important, is the fact that a curfew car will be assigned to each of the 25 police districts to round up curfew violators. An inordinate number of teens killed in Chicago are killed on the streets after curfew.
Police urge parents to strictly enforce curfew hours. Curfew for children under 17 is 10pm Sunday through Thursday and 11pm on Friday and Saturday.
