Two suspects are in custody and one woman is dead after police say drug suspects crashed their minivan into two cars on the South Side this morning.
It happened just after 7 a.m. when DEA and Chicago police officers in two undercover cars stopped a pair of drug suspects in a van near 63rd and King Drive, according to News Affairs Officer Robert Perez.
Perez says when the officers got out of their cars, the suspects tried to run them over. The suspects then reportedly rammed the officers' vehicles and sped off.
At some point, an officer fired a shot at the vehicle but missed, according to Perez.
The minivan took off down 63rd Street and crashed into two other vehicles at St. Lawrence. Perez says a 42-year-old woman in one vehicle was killed. The driver of the second vehicle refused treatment at the scene.
After the crash, Perez says the suspects got out of their van and ran away. Police caught up with them after a brief foot chase. Perez says the offenders were taken to St. Bernard's Hospital to check for any injuries they may have suffered in the crash.
Perez says police cars were not chasing the suspects' vehicle at the time of the crash, contrary to earlier published reports.
The identity of the dead woman is not yet released.
