Itabirinha, Brazil – Many Brazilian immigrants stopped chasing the American dream and returned home to pursue the Brazilian dream. The slow US economy in recent years prompted them to look back at their booming country for a financially stable future. In an AlJazeera English report, Gabriel Elizondo traveled to the small town of Itabirinha, 459 km from the central city of Belo Horizonte, to meet with a handful of reverse immigrants.
It’s an interesting phenomenon that many immigrant communities in the US face. People from countries in Europe, Asia and Latin America find their wages in the US diminish in value when they send them back home to their families. Some, like the Brazilians, find the prospect of moving back to their homeland feasible and profitable. Others will have to ride out the economic slowdown and hope that in a couple of years they can afford a place back in their country.
