Before the chair in his new office was barely warm, in a move meant to serve as payback to the extreme left-wing of the Democratic party, President Obama signed off on a number of Executive Orders. One of those orders involved shutting down the controversial prison located at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Another order was signed at the same time that suspended all legal actions pending against the detainees while a review of what to do with them was done. Besides the fact that justice was suspended for political expediency, the Administration left America in a quandary, where the question of what to do with the prisoners once the prison was closed had to be answered.
Apparently, the President has decided that he will try to dump as many of these prisoners off on our European allies as they will take. In a move reminiscent of a person who acts first and decides later how to deal with the details, Attorney General Eric Holder has been sent on a European Vacation to "beg" our allies to take some of our problem off of our hands.
When Obama signed the order, he claimed that it would help America reclaim the "moral high ground." It would appear that our friends across the ocean have their doubts about that, as is evidenced by the lukewarm reception they have displayed to this suggestion.
"If the detainees are no longer dangerous, why don't they stay in the U.S.?" - Austria's interior minister, Maria Fekter
"In Germany, many are asking why America isn't taking care of its own business. If you started it, you ought to finish it." - Simon Koschut, an associate fellow with the German Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin
But don't worry America, if Holder isn't successful in dumping these prisoners on our friends, the Obama administration is totally willing to heed the suggestion of Austria's interior minister by sending some of the terrorist to Virginia, starting with the Chinese Muslims known as Uighurs. According to Holder, they are safe and should have never been locked up in the first place.
In a statement meant to explain away the reluctance being displayed by our allies, Mr. Holder stated, "I don't think they're looking for as much of American leadership as a partnership."
Don't worry Mr. Holder. I don't think anyone is confusing these Gitmo actions with "leadership."
