Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated - Mark Twain

These words by the great philosopher and humorist could have been said by conservatives and the Republican party after 2008. In fact, it was essentially the message we heard following the takeover of all things Washington by the Democrat party last year.

Yet, in the aftermath of the first major elections to be held since the charismatic, yet highly inept Barack Obama was elected, it would appear that conservatives are not only alive and well, but are making a comeback as the nation prepares for the 2010 elections.

Governor-elect Chris Christi (R-NJ) and Governor-elect Robert McDonnell (R-VA) can identify with Mr. Twain. As their impressive victories clearly demonstrate, the death of the Republican Party and its conservative roots have been greatly exaggerated.

Christi won in a state that is overwhelmingly Democrat, with heavy influences by organized labor. His message of lower taxes, less government and more individual freedom resonated with voters who were tired of higher taxes, more government and less freedom. In the all important "independent" vote, he won 60% to 30% over the incumbent, Jon Corzine.

McDonnell slaughtered his Democrat opponent, winning by nearly 20 percentage points. In addition, Republicans took the other statewide elections in Virginia, winning the Lt. Governor and Attorney General spots by similar margins.

Even the heavily covered special election for New York's 23rd congressional district between Democrat Bill Owens and Conservative Doug Hoffman demonstrated the power conservatives are beginning to wield.

While the state and national Republican machine tried to force a "Democrat-lite" candidate (Dede Scozzafava) on the party (she endorsed the Democrat when she dropped out of the election) the voters rallied behind the conservative Republican candidate that represented them best, giving him an impressive 45% of the vote after being in single digits just a few weeks ago.

It may have been a "victory" for the Democrats, but conservatives (approximately 40% of Americans according to recent polling) have made it perfectly clear that RINOs (Republican In Name Only) will not receive their support. Only candidates who believe in lower taxes, smaller government and individual freedom will get their votes.

Conservatism is alive and well in America, and it was clearly demonstrated in yesterday's elections.
