If you have pets or you know people who do, it is probably no surprise for you to see (or hear) pets being treated like children.

A female dog becomes a “dog-ter” (daughter) and a couple of male cats might be called “the boys.”  Pet-less people might find this silly or even a little bizarre. But know this:  There are plenty of crazies out there who are just like us.

A new Associated Press-Petside.com poll found that most people think of their pets as part of the family.  About one-half of those polled said the pet is just as important as any other person in the household.  About 36 percent classified their pet as a more distant family member – but still family.

Membership does have its privileges.  For pets, being a member of the family means getting all the human amenities of home: eating people food, sleeping in a human bed, wearing clothes and being a part of the family portrait.

Pets can even become surrogate children, especially for single women, the survey found. Men can feel the same way about their pets but might be less likely to show it, according to the results.

The telephone-based poll took place from May 28 to June 1 and was conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Media. The results are based on a random sample of 1,110 pet owners, with a error margin of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.
