Thomas Bruckner hopes to have drying cages banned in pet grooming salons after his dog died of heat stroke shortly after being placed in one.
Bailey, his 2-year-old pug-beagle mix, was dropped off for a bath and play time at Pampered Pooch Doggie Daycare and Spa in Hicksville, NY, Newsday reported. The dog became comatose then died the next morning in September.
A veterinarian could not verify exactly how it happened. Bruckner thinks it was the drying cage, a device used by many groomers. It works by placing a dog inside the cage then using a tube or hair dryer to blow air into the cage or crate.
Bruckner, a Long Island resident, was awarded $1,000 out of court in January after suing the groomer.
He is not stopping there. Brucker wants grooming cages banned. He believes they are particularly dangerous for short-snouted dogs because the forced air in the cages can make it difficult for them to breath.
More information is available on Bruckner's Web site, badgroomer.com. He also supports a state senate bill that would ban drying cages, require licenses for grooming businesses and require groomers to take exams.
The National Dog Groomers Association of America opposes a ban on drying cages.
